Means of Communicating
Our primary tools of communicating with
the North Georgia Conference churches, pastors, laity will
be the email from Connectional Ministries, this Web site and e-mail.
Communications with disaster teams will be by phone (landlines
and cell), fax, and using various facets of amateur
radio.
Bulletin inserts for
local churches will be produced and posted on our Web site.
Also, news stories and features that help put a face to the
disaster will be contained on the website.
Communicating about an Possible Disaster
Disasters can occurred totally unexpected or there may
be several days or more of warning before a disaster. When
a there is the possibility of a disaster, an e-mail blast, known
as a “Bulletin.” will be sent to the District Offices for
forwarding. A template has been created for these e-mail
blasts so that we can drop in the appropriate information and
ensure uniformity in what and how we’re communicating.
Using information from a wide variety of sources, the
first Bulletin will contain information on what we know about
the situation, preparation, insurance, protection, etc. The
Bulletins will be posted on this Web site also and may be found
with the menu item entitled “Disaster Watch.”
Communicating After the Disaster Event
After the initial Bulletin, Bulletins updating the
situation will be prepared by the Conference Communications
office at Simpsonwood with the Disaster Response Committee's input. There will be no set schedule for the Bulletins,
just as the situation warrants. Once the disaster event
has passed, the Bulletins will be advising churches what the needs are,
how they can help, etc.
Conference Communications Office
The Conference Communications office will be included
in communication regarding damages, injuries, and deaths, if
any, and relay this information to begin to develop articles.
These articles will assist the internal audience in the
Conference and our external audience (United Methodist News
Service, Religion News Service, The Reporter, secular media) in
knowing how to respond, that the church is in fact responding,
and other pertinent information.
Flexibility
The nature of disasters requires flexibility, and we
will evaluate and adjust communications as the need arises.
