Your local government will issue evacuation orders when a disaster
is impending. This will be communicated via local radio and
television stations, or by local police and fire personnel going
door to door, or by a reverse 911 phone call.
A disaster evacuation route and destination should be already
planned.
The Essential Records Bag should be taken with you or stored it in
a fire and flood safe location or put in a waterproof safe deposit box.
Here is what you need to address when you prepare to leave:
Essential Records Bag (review and update home inventory
annually)
- Waterproof Plastic bag
- Pencils, pen, paper, & Scissors
- List of bills with business addresses, account number, phone
number, and due dates
- Inventory
of house and/or pictures (paper, video, pictures-update
annually)
- List -Family members, physicians and dentist for (name and
phone)
- Copies of Life, Medical, and Homeowner Insurance (company,
phone, account number)
- Important Family Information including person not located
locally (names and phone)
- Medical Devices Information (brand, model & serial # of
devices such as a pace maker, glasses)
- Medical
supplies and reserve prescription medications in containers with
proper labels
- Birth certificates for each
- Marriage certificate
- Social Security cards, passports
- Stocks, bonds, and other securities
- Wills
- Deeds
- Recent tax returns
- Camera and Film to document any damage for insurance
Other Documents to take with You (papers that will be
needed if there is damage to your neighborhood or your home or
could be lost)
- Driver's license or personal identification for each (also
proof of residence)
- Checkbook, Credit Cards and Cash
Personal
Disaster Supplies Kit (review annually)
- Alarm
Clock, battery-operated
- AM/FM/NOAA (tone alert) Radio, 110 volt/battery-operated/
crank
- Cell Phone(s) (with the car charger cables)
- Extra Batteries for Radio/Flashlight (keep in refrigerator)
- First Aid Kit
- Flashlights, battery-operated or crank
- Sturdy container for above (backpack/plastic container)
Essential Supplies
- Car keys including spare set
- Fuel in Car
(Fill tank early)
- Map of area with marked escape routes (multiple in various
directions)
- Eyeglasses (with prescription if possible)
- Bottled Water (1 gallon per person per day)
- Foods that do not require refrigeration or cooking
- A change of clothing for each, shoes, raingear
- Sleeping bag or blankets, pillow for each (if going to
a public shelter)
- Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items
- Supplies for infant
- Toys for children
- Items for Elderly or Disabled family members
- Medical equipment - dentures, crutches, wheel chair, etc.
- Paper Products, toilet paper and paper towels
- Book, or other reading material
- Children’s Books,
videos, and a few toys
- Insect Repellent
- Sunscreen
- Soap and Toiletries
