"About Citizens Corp, we all have a role in hometown
security. Citizens Corp asks you to embraced the personal
responsibility to be prepared; get training in first aid and
emergency skills; and to volunteer to support local emergency
responders, disaster relief, and community safety."
The Community Emergency Response
Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness
for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic
disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and
rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.
Using the training learned in the classroom and during
exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood
or workplace following an event when professional responders are
not immediately available to help. CERT members also are
encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a
more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their
community.
The CERT program is a specialized federal program where
you may become the first responder for your family and
neighborhood in disaster in that you are trained to deal with
some first aid, utility situations, some search and rescue, and
are the person to assess and communicate what sort of assistance
is needed. This is a good course for a church ERT or disaster team.
Generally county CERT programs are divided into several
levels. One level is for the volunteer that just wants the
course for his/her family and neighborhood. The second
level realizes that without reinforcement training their newly
developed skills may be eventually lost so there is a need for
ongoing training and they want this. The third level is
those that want even more specialized training in order to
protect their family and community.
