| The state of Georgia is in the center
of the Southeast Jurisdiction of the Methodist Church (SEJ) and
it takes a long day's travel to reach disasters within the
extremities of the Jurisdiction (Kentucky, Virginia, Florida,
and Mississippi). So response priority is within the
active Southeast Jurisdiction, however there may be teams that
are willing to travel to disaster destinations that have
requested assistance via UMVIM and are even farther away.

1. Texas - Hurricane Ike 2008
This information is from Kathie Mann, the
United Methodist Volunteers in Missions (UMVIM)
conference coordinator for Texas . Only Early Response Teams
(self-sufficient) should sign up at: http://www.txcumc.org/ikevolunteer.
The Rita Recovery office is not currently functioning.
There will be two other locations set up as long-term recovery
offices in a matter of weeks. Currently, all teams need
to register online at the above link, and they will be
contacted for deployment. There are several locations
which will be able to handle teams as staging points, but all
teams must be completely self-contained. Gas lines are
four hours long in Houston, and little gas is available.
Most places are without electricity. Water, ice, and
electricity are extremely limited. People are using
feeding centers to get MREs, water, and ice. There is
limited phone and cell phone service, but the infrastructure
is being rebuilt as rapidly as possible.

and providing case management for storm victims in the Kansas

Volunteers and volunteer teams are needed for disaster relief
and rebuild work following the storms in early May that
destroyed Greensburg, damaged other Kansas communities and
produced flooding in many locations in the state. There
are many opportunities available.
Preference will be given to experienced adult teams, due to
housing shortage. Overnight teams will be housed at the
Haviland or Mullinville United Methodist churches. Some cots will be provided,
and you will need your own bedding. There are some
RV/trailer hookups available in Haviland. Minimum age for
overnight team members is 16.
